Construction of our new apartment building at 525 Stone Church Road East has moved up off the ground.
Last week crews began installing the hollow-core slabs that make up the building's second floor. Each slab is a long precast concrete panel, made off site and delivered ready to install. A mobile crane lifts the panels one at a time onto the supporting structure, where they are set side by side to form a continuous floor. Guardrails go up along the open edge as each section is placed, so crews can work safely on the new deck.
Precast floors like these need far less formwork and on-site curing than a poured concrete slab, which helps keep the schedule moving. Once a level is complete, it becomes the working platform for the next one.
The building is going up on the grounds of Lolcama Court, our existing townhome community in east Hamilton. Building new homes on land we already own is one of the most direct ways we can add affordable housing in an established neighbourhood. When complete, the development will add 107 new homes.
We will continue to share construction progress here as the building rises, and this website will be updated when the application process opens.
